Ignition and combustion characteristics of hydrotreated pyrolysis oil in a combustion research unit

Biomass-derived fuels are promising in reducing life-cycle CO2 emissions and achieving the goal of sustainable mobility future. This work investigates ignition behavior combustion process hydrotreated pyrolysis oil (HPO) derived from various biomass resources. They tested a research unit based on constant volume technology, which imitates compression engines. Various conditions HPO benchmarked with commericially avalable biofuels fossile fuels: vegetable (HVO) fatty acid methyl ester (FAME), diesel, marine gas oil. The results showed that igntiion delay time follows an order folloing: > diesel-like HVO. Both type after-treatment have small influence HPO. Two regimes observed at different chamber temperature range. It also revealed blending into HVO can extend And HVO/HPO increases as blend ratio increases. At 75 vol% ratio, HPO/HVO shows identical diesel. In addition, viscosity blends diesel quite similar. indicated possibility using 100% bio-fuel modern engine to provide power future mobility.
